FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We recommend booking your newborn portraits during your second trimester to secure a spot on our calendar. After your baby arrives, simply contact us with your actual birth date, and we’ll finalise your appointment within the ideal 7-14 day timeframe when newborns are sleepy, less alert and more comfortable in the womb-like poses.

We recommend neutral, complementary colours like cream, white, grey, or soft pastels that won’t reflect colour onto your baby’s skin. Avoid patterns, logos, and bright colours. For a timeless look, choose simple, solid-coloured tops. We provide detailed style guidance after booking and have dresses for Mother’s to wear.

The ideal time for posed newborn photography is between 7-14 days after birth. During this period, babies typically sleep more deeply and can be comfortably positioned in those adorable curled-up poses and your baby can also be easier for parents to hold in some in hand positions (under 3.5-4kgs). For babies over 2 weeks, we adapt our approach to suit each baby.

Professional hair and makeup can enhance your photos and help you feel your best. We partner with talented Sydney-based makeup artists who specialise in newborn photography and can arrange this service for an additional fee of $395.

Newborn sessions at our North Sydney studio typically last 2-3 hours. This allows plenty of time for feeding breaks, soothing, nappy changes, and multiple setups. We never rush and follow your baby’s lead to ensure a calm, comfortable experience.

These are all common newborn skin conditions that we can address with gentle retouching. Our editing process preserves your baby’s natural appearance while softening temporary skin conditions. If your baby has severe baby acne or jaundice, we might recommend waiting a few extra days for your session. Additional editing is $100.

Most of our artistic newborn portraits feature your baby in simple wraps, delicate props, or beautiful natural skin tones. We provide all necessary wraps, headbands, bonnets, and outfits in our studio collection. If you have a special outfit or heirloom item you’d like to include, please bring it along.

It is so normal to feel self conscious but please don’t worry! Gentle retouching is included in all packages. If requested we can edit your concerns while maintaining a natural look. Our posing techniques also help minimise areas of concern and focus on the connection to your newborn, not our body concerns.

While sleepy babies are easier to pose, we have extensive experience working with alert newborns too! We’ll adapt our approach with more wrapped poses and awake captures. Some of the most heartwarming images happen when those little eyes are open. Our studio maintains the perfect temperature and white noise environment to encourage sleep, so you can totally relax!

We follow your baby’s needs completely. Our studio provides a comfortable, private area for nursing or bottle feeding. We encourage frequent feeding to keep your baby content. Sarah has extensive soothing techniques, but parents’ familiar touch and voice are often most effective, so we welcome your involvement.

This is where the magic happens! Trust in your photographer, Sarah has a way with people and she will gently guide you and pose all family members.

It’s the emotive conversation and the love and laughter you share during the session that creates your magic. You don’t need to plan ANYTHING – it will happen and all our clients worry about this – just look at their portraits!

Absolutely! Family and sibling portraits are an important part of our newborn sessions. We typically photograph family combinations at the beginning of the session while siblings are fresh and patient. For young siblings, we recommend having someone available to take them home or for a walk after their portion is complete. There are plenty of toys and books in studio and we recommend minimal device use to maintain their attention for what is needed!

You will receive a few sneak peek images within 24 hours of your session. Your viewing gallery of 50+ beautiful images will be ready within 2 to 3 weeks and we will invite you back to our studio for a personalised viewing and ordering session where you can select your favourite images and custom products.

Newborn safety is our first priority. Sarah is fully trained in safety, handling, and hygiene practices and our studio kept very clean! Any of the more technical or complex poses you see in our portfolio are only achieved when following the newborns lead as we never force a pose. Sarah will not attempt certain challenging or uncomfortable positions and recommends you do your due diligence when choosing your photographer to make sure they have high standards of physical care and do not over heat the baby’s environment.

Beyond our digital collections, Harlly & Co specialises in heirloom-quality albums, handcrafted wooden frames with fine art wall pieces, and custom hand torn prints. Many clients choose our “First Year Collection” package, which includes newborn, 6-month, and 1-year sessions documented in a keepsake album.

We understand that babies arrive on their own schedule! We reserve a limited number of newborn sessions each month to accommodate early or late arrivals. Simply keep us updated, and we will adjust your appointment accordingly to ensure we capture your newborn within the ideal timeframe.

With guidance if needed, your favourite images will be edited and retouched with your requests and sent to your within 2 to 4 weeks from appointment.

All wall art, print and albums are in production and will be received within a 10 to 15 day time frame.

We photograph our maternity sessions both in-studio and on-location. We have some personal favourites in and around Sydney, guided by the light and time of year… but we are always open to our client’s inspiration!
