Harlly & Co Photography has been the endorsed newborn photographer at Mater Maternity since 2016. Our studio at 9 Myrtle Street, North Sydney is a 3-minute walk from the Mater Hospital — which means we can be at your suite within the morning, and your newborn studio session is a pram-walk away once you’re home.

From planned caesarean birth stories in theatre, to Fresh 48 sessions in your suite, to special care and NICU documentation — we capture the first chapter of your family at the hospital where it begins, then continue the story in our calm North Sydney studio.

Sarah has photographed hundreds of births at the Mater alongside more than 20 obstetricians, and is also recommended at North Shore Private and Royal North Shore. She knows the wards, the light, and how to work quietly around feeding, visits and your recovery.

The session begins with 5 digital portraits, with a viewing gallery of up to 40 images. Families can choose to purchase additional photos upon seeing complete collection and choose to add prints, frames and albums.

Yes — Fresh 48 and planned caesarean birth sessions take place in your own Mater suite or theatre. Sarah has been the endorsed newborn photographer at Mater Maternity since 2016 and follows all hospital and NSW Health protocols, capturing tiny features, first meetings with siblings, cuddles with parents, and the raw emotion of those first days.

We adhere strictly to all hospital protocols and NSW Health guidelines. Sarah is fully vaccinated, and can wear a mask during sessions. Hand sanitiser is always used before handling your baby and we never attend if showing any symptoms of illness. We can adapt to any specific health requirements your hospital may have.

We recommend booking your session during your second or early third trimester to secure availability. Since these sessions happen within the first 3 days post birth, we keep a limited number of due dates on our calendar each month to ensure we can accommodate you when your baby arrives.

We offer specialised NICU photography sessions with approaches adapted to the NICU environment. These sessions focus on documenting your connection despite the medical equipment, capturing tiny details, and the journey of these remarkable beginnings. We work closely with NICU staff to ensure all protocols are followed or adapt time frame to when your newborn is older and moves back into the newborn ward.

When you go into labor or shortly after delivery, simply send us a text message or email (as specified in your booking information). Let us know your hospital location, room number (if available), and preferred time window for your session. We recommend scheduling during daylight hours when possible for the best natural lighting.

Your viewing gallery will be sent to you within 1 to 2 weeks. A typical Fresh 48 session viewing gallery has approximately 30-40 professionally edited digital images via the online gallery. These images capture details of your baby, your interactions, and the environment of those first hours. You can choose to purchase a few of these, or all images.

Since 2016, Sarah has been the endorsed newborn photographer at Mater Maternity and is also recommended at North Shore Private Hospital and Royal North Shore and is well-trained in the hospital environment. She has extensive experience photographing in all hospitals and working with many of Sydney’s leading Obstetricians and midwives and will happily visit other hospitals at request.

You will receive a few digital images as a preview within 24 hours of your session—perfect for birth announcements. Your complete gallery will be ready within 1-2 weeks, faster than our standard newborn sessions, so you can share these special moments while they’re still fresh.

These sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your newborns feeding and settling. This is enough time to document the important details without overwhelming new parents and baby. We work efficiently with respect for your recovery and the hospital environment.

Yes! All images from your Fresh 48 session can be printed as part of our product line. Many families include these images in birth announcement cards, “Welcome to the World” albums that combine Fresh 48 and newborn images, or as part of a first-year documentation package.

Your comfort and recovery are our priority. Sarah is experienced in working with mothers who have had cesarean births or complicated deliveries. We use discrete, respectful approaches to capture your connection with your baby while being mindful of your physical comfort. Just communicate any concerns or limitations, and we’ll adapt accordingly.

If you’re discharged before we can schedule your hospital session, we can adapt to a “Welcome Home” session in your home within the first week. These sessions capture similar intimate moments but in your home environment as you settle in with your new baby.

Absolutely! First meetings between siblings and baby make for incredibly emotional photographs. Grandparent reactions are equally precious. We recommend coordinating their visit to coincide with our session time. Please confirm your hospital’s current visitor policies when booking.

Fresh 48 and studio newborn sessions each capture distinct phases of your baby’s earliest days and complement each other beautifully:

Fresh 48 Sessions:

Documentary-style capturing raw, authentic moments in the hospital environment
Focuses on emotion, first interactions, and the story of your baby’s arrival
Includes hospital details, medical bracelets and the environment of your baby’s first days
Features natural, unposed images of your baby as they naturally look in those first 48 hours (often with vernix, peeling skin, hospital hats)
Typically shorter sessions (45-60 minutes) respecting the recovery period
Parents are central to the images, capturing your early bonding moments

Studio Newborn Sessions:

Artistic, posed portraits in a controlled environment with professional lighting
Focuses on capturing timeless, polished portraits highlighting your baby’s features
Includes professional props, wraps, and setups impossible to create in a hospital
Features posed, curled-up sleeping positions only achievable during that 7-14 day window
Longer sessions (2-3 hours) allowing time for feeding, soothing, and multiple setups
Baby is often the solo subject, with parent and family portraits as complementary

WHERE DO WE SHOOT?

We photograph our maternity sessions both in-studio and on-location. We have some personal favourites in and around Sydney, guided by the light and time of year… but we are always open to our client’s inspiration!
